There's a bunch of people out there that simply don't want to use a Microsoft account, and still want to be regular Windows uses and be able to download apps.

Remember while the modern UI app of Skype may not work the old desktop version of Skype is still available to download and install and it works on Windows 8.

A year later, and it is actually worse: there is no way to get around using Microsoft's account; trying to do so creates an endless loop now.

The Skype preinstalled app doesn't allow you to bypass having to enter a MS account. The account in question is a local account? Regards Nick. MS apparently wants to control access between apps.
I use portable apps with the PortableApps launcher. Skype is one of my portable apps. I just sign-in with whatever User ID and bypass any unified syncing app nonsense.
